php|tek 2008 - Arrival

Tuesday, May 20th, 2008

After a 8 hour flight I arrived at Chicago O’Hare. Didn’t take long for me to clear customs, and the only baggage I had was carry-on, so I didn’t have to wait for any bags. A short cab trip later I checked into the hotel. Later people in #phptek on Freenode told me there was a shuttle, but I wasn’t aware at the time.

The suite is pretty big, a separate bedroom and living area each with its own LCD TV. Instead of a mini bar, the room features an empty fridge. I also have a phone mounted next to my toilet. Silly Americans :P.

Hotel staff is very friendly and helpful. I bought a power converter for my laptop in the gift shop, but I was a dollar short in cash. I offered to go to the ATM, but it wasn’t necessary. After dinner and a shower, I headed downstairs to meet with some of the other attendees. Everybody’s very nice and laid back, and so far I’ve only encountered one other Dutch guy. I know some other people via IRC from Chicago, which I also hope to meet this week.

I look forward to tutorial day tomorrow. I’m still doubting whether to go to the Zend Certification Crash Course, as I’ll probably know most of it already.
